Overview
In its twelve-year history, the Healthy Kids Learn Better (HKLB) Cadre of Trainers has provided free professional development in health education for thousands of teachers, pre-service students and prevention specialists in Oregon.
The HKLB Cadre began in 1996 and was initially funded through Centers for Disease Control and Preventions' Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) HIV funds. In 1999, the funding was augmented with state tobacco and Safe and Drug Free School funds. From 2003 - 2008, increased DASH funding provided even more resources.
Currently, the Cadre contracts with a variety of state agencies and nonprofits to deliver high-quality professional development to educators. See our Funders page for additional information.
Over the past twelve years, the cadre has had an average of 18 trainers during a school year who commit annually. Trainers include K-12 teachers, district prevention specialists and curriculum directors, community health educators, public health professionals, retirees and professors of higher education. Meet our trainers and coordinators.
Training events offered by the Cadre include:
- Health Education Foundations
- Using Health Education Standards and Assessment in the Classroom
- District Mapping and Alignment
- Curriculum Trainings within the areas of Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drug Prevention, Safe and Drug Free Schools, Sexual Health Promotion, Nutrition Education, Fire Awareness, Injury Prevention, Comprehensive Health Education Curricula Programs and more!
